Apollo vs Hunter — tested

Apollo vs Hunter — All-in-One Sales Platform vs Focused Finder

Apollo and Hunter are picked for very different reasons. Apollo is a massive all-in-one sales-intelligence platform (huge contact database, sequences, dialer, CRM); Hunter is a focused, polished email finder + verifier. I ran both on the same sample plus Engage — the right choice is really "do I want a whole sales engine, or a sharp finder?".

Database scale vs data quality

Apollo’s headline strength is scale: a very large B2B database with prospecting filters, sequences, and a dialer, at a price that makes it a default for many sales teams. On the same re-verified sample it lands around 68% coverage at ~91% accuracy — respectable, and its real value is the whole workflow, not just the email.

Hunter comes in lower on raw coverage (~58% at ~86% accuracy) but is cleaner and more focused as a finder/verifier, with a UI and API teams trust. So: Apollo if you want the platform; Hunter if the finder itself is the job.

Where each is genuinely the right buy

Apollo is a strong, established choice when you want prospecting, enrichment, and outreach in one tool and are optimizing for coverage + workflow over pinpoint data quality. Hunter is the better pick when you want the cleaner finder/verifier as a component in a stack you already have. Neither is wrong — it is a platform-vs-tool decision.

The blind spot both share: Microsoft 365

Big databases and standard checkers both guess on Microsoft 365. A database hands you the address it has on file, which may be old; a checker asks the mail server, and Microsoft gives the same answer for a real inbox and a fake one. Either way, the real bounce hides in the Microsoft 365 part of your list. Engage doesn’t guess on those inboxes — you get a clear yes or no — and it refunds any email that still bounces, wherever the address came from.

The verdict

  • You want an all-in-one sales engine (database + sequences + dialer) → Apollo is a strong, established platform (~68% / ~91%).
  • You want a focused, cleaner finder/verifier as a component → Hunter is the sharper tool (~58% / ~86%).
  • You need to know what actually delivers on Microsoft 365 → Engage gives a definitive O365 answer and refunds bounces, on top of whatever sourced the address.
